Dear Otis- 2 Years!

Dear Otis- 2 Years,

Right now you are asleep, exhausted from a fun-filled second birthday.  I am tired, but find myself drawn to revel in the sweetness of reminiscence.  It has been the greatest pleasure to watch your personality start to unfold this year.

You are such a boy!  You love tractors.  The highway construction on 101 is better than tv to you.  You yell “I see a tractor over there.”  You run to the window to see the garbage truck go by and Lani joins you for the entertainment.

You want to make noise with everything. Drums and ukeleles are the obvious instruments, but spoons, walls, and suitcases do the trick as well.  You sing constantly- ABC, twinkle twinkle, if you are happy and you know it, head shoulders knees and toes, the itsy bitsy spider . . . your vocal repertoire grows daily.

You also have some less than average two year old hobbies.  You are an avid collector of coins, rocks, and guitar picks.  Ah yes, that’s right folks- chokable items are your specialty.  However, you don’t want to put them in your mouth.  You simply need to know where they are, be it in your pocket or on a table.  You don’t have a security blanket.  You have security guitar picks.

Lucky for us you understand that these items can’t come to bed with you.  Your crib entourage is made up of various balls, sheep, dog dog, and an assortment of blankets.  You like to go  to bed with company.

Physically these days you are very into jumping and hide and seek.  You still air on the lazy side and frequently badger me with “I need up on mama,” but you are getting more adventurous each week.  You are a fiend at the playground, especially on the rock climbing wall.

Mentally you enjoy counting although you are not a fan of six and seven.  Who needs ’em anyway. “Five, eight, nine, ten, lemon, twelve” sounds good to me!  You also love your tiny books.  These are cardboard books that each represent a letter and have four pages of pictures of items starting with that letter.  You astound me with how quickly you master new words.  “Jack-o-lantern, kite, ladybug, moon, nest, octopus, penguin.”  You will sit for a good spell and read those books with me.

You have started using your imagination which is super fun to watch. The other night you gave your bathtub froggies a time  out and then put them to bed. So cute!

Your memory is ridiculous.  We can mention something in passing and you will bring it up days later.  You no longer yell “damn it.”  Now you say in your most serious voice “mama, no say damn it.”  You are expressing yourself with such ease these days and you crack us up with you the things you say.  Just this week you got car sick and threw up.  We had been driving to Tahoe with another mom and her son, Eli.  After I got you cleaned up and back in the car, you decided to explain to Eli what had happened.  You said “Hi Eli.  I burped.”  I love how your mind works.

Well, my dear, I could ramble on, but I’d like to save some room to record your 2 year old bday festivities before I sign off.  To mark this momentous occasion, we celebrated in style.  Last weekend we celebrated with Dad (who did not have this week off work like I did) and you opened your gifts from us- your own arm chair, mini piano, backpack, and tractors.  Then we all ate cupcakes.

This week we continued the festivities with a destination Lake Tahoe birthday party with your best buds Allie and Eli.  You all woke up to balloons this morning and got to eat brownies and play with your new presents this afternoon.  All of your friends (Allie, Eli, Carter, Caroline, and Ryland) pitched in to get you a super cool grill and chef accessories.

We have had a blast this week, and we have had a blast these last two years.  Your merry, humor-filled, goofball nature is pure magic!  Happy Birthday my sweet boy!

Love,

Mom

Last image I’ll leave you with is “that was then, this is now.”  You are still the same and yet you’ve completely morphed.

  1. What a wonderful post…about a wonderful child! I liked your comment about watching Otis’s personality “start to unfold”. I might have said that his personality exploded…He is such a character! And oh my, those cavernous dimples…

  3. I LOVE that you do this, Becky!!! What a special thing for him to have as he grows — a loving documentary of his life. I WISH I had begun something like this for Dylan early on. You are obviously a fantastic Mama & he’s lucky to have you!!!

Love to all 3 of you & Happy 2nd Birthday, Otis!!!
