Dear Otis- 9 Months

Dear Otis,

You are 9 months old today! To celebrate I let you take your morning nap with me.  At 29 inches and over 18 pounds, you barely fit on me anymore.  However, I know that once you are on the move you won’t be as likely to cuddle up with Mom, so I am soaking it in while I can.

Your dad and I don’t think it will be long before you are on the move.  We’ve even ordered the baby gate for the top of the staircase.  This month you have learned to turn 360 degrees while on your belly.  You have also experimented with a few scoots backwards.  You seem to prefer sitting up over tummy time, but we are trying to give you time on your tummy so that you can discover crawling.  We keep you from fussing by crawling around ourselves.  You think it’s hilarious when Dad, Mom, and Lani are all crawling around on the floor.  Dad and I didn’t realize how tiring crawling was before now.

This month you had a slumber party with Grammie and Grampie.  Mom and Dad spent our first night away from you to go see a concert and stay in a hotel in San Francisco.  You did great!  You napped well, ate well, and slept well on Grammie and Grampie’s watch.

Speaking of sleeping, you have also decided you only need to get up once a night now.  You made that switch all on your own.  Woo hoo!  We’ll see if you can keep it up.  Last week you were sick for the first time so your sleeping patterns were a little off.  Fingers crossed that they’ll go back to the once a night menu option.

We felt so bad for you last week.  You’d had a runny nose before, but this was your first fever and yucky cough.  You tried so hard to be cheerful, but then you’d just moan.  It broke our hearts.  Gramps came up to watch you so that we could go to work.  Look how sad you looked when you had a fever.

We are so glad that you are better now.  You also got 4 teeth in the last 2 weeks so I am sure that added to your discomfort.  You are now up to 6 teeth!

In addition to our big trip to San Diego this month (see Mother’s Day blog post), you also got to take a trip to the Butter and Eggs Festival.  What’s that you say?  Well, that is a very famous festival hosted right in our hometown to celebrate Petaluma’s heritage.  We got to see a parade and everything.  I did not have a cow or chicken costume for you, but . . . . . .

You’re welcome!

This month you seem to have gotten incredibly strong.  You not only drop things off of your high chair, but hurl them across the room.  The good news is that I think you are starting to understand some words, including “no,” so we should be able to channel this new found strength of yours into directions other than pinching our faces and pulling our hair.  You definitely know your name and I think you understand “no,” “up,” and maybe a few other words.  You also continue to talk up a storm, especially to yourself.  Mirrors are your best friends!

You love to go on walks, and I have even started jogging with you.  You also love banging on Dad’s bass drum and playing his bazouki.  When you strum it just right and it makes a noise you look up at him with a huge grin that says, “I did that!”

Lani and you continue to be great friends.  She doesn’t like it when you are sad and comes to check on you.

It is crazy that it seems like you are leaving babyhood behind and heading into toddlerdom.  You seem like you want to crawl, eat real food, and converse with us.  You are no longer a helpless little being, but a delightful little boy who is getting smarter before our very eyes.  I have never been happier in my whole life than I’ve been since you joined our family!  I love you so much!

Next time you need to get Otis to sleep, here’s a trick you might want to try that I just learned on Facebook:

  3. I LOVE all the pictures! And he is such a little person now! The hair is amazing, I love that he has the curls and I hope they stick (a la Brad). Congratulations on your first night away! Did it feel oddly amazing and like you were missing a limb at the same time?
