Dear Otis- 6 Months

Dear Otis-

Today is your half birthday, the big 6 month milestone.  Woo hoo!  I thought that I’d write to you about what a day in your life is like right now.  Your days are pretty awesome in my opinion.

You wake up between 6am and 7am.  I usually hear you babbling in your crib.  I am super jealous that you wake up so happy.  I am still a grump in the morning.  I often bring you into my bed and try to convince you to go back to sleep.  This leads to you playing with my face with your hands and me inevitably coming to the conclusion that the day has begun.  After a quick diaper change you come with me to make my coffee and pour my cereal and then you hang out in your breakfast chair with your dog dog while I eat my cereal and drink my coffee and shake off my grumpies.

Once I have swallowed a bit of coffee I am ready to play with you.  Tummy time fun begins!

Now that your hands are so skilled you love playing with your millions of toys.  Dad is a master puppeteer and makes amazing chicken noises.  Aunt Jen and Uncle Mike have already begun encouraging you to get into sports via their gifts.  And you have chosen your first musical instrument- the maracas!

You know how to roll over from your stomach to your back and you are so close to rolling from your back to stomach.  You now like to spend time hanging out on your side.  Lani (our beagle) has become a major fascination for you and I’m guessing that when you do finally roll from back to stomach it will be because you are craning your neck around trying to follow her.  She mesmerizes you and likes to give you kisses.

I often bring you into the bathroom when I take a shower.  You seem to like the acoustics in there and practice your vocalization skills.  I can definitely hear consonants and vowels now.  You say ba and ma but they aren’t attached to any meaning yet.

We try to get a walk in each morning.  Sometimes it’s just you, me, and Lani and sometimes we walk with our posse of moms and babies. You don’t instantly fall asleep in the front pack (ergo) any more.  You love to take in the scenery.  I can get you to giggle if I do jumping jacks while you are in the ergo.

At this point (mind you I’ve skipped over some feedings and diaper changes) it is time to head to work.  I load you up in the carseat and you play with your ball all the way to daycare.  When Tia answers the door your face lights up.  She says you love watching the big kids play and she thinks you are adorable and hilarious.  My favorite Tia quote yet is “When Otis poops, it’s a lot of poop!”  We love when you poop on Tia’s watch. 🙂

Dad picks you up from daycare and when you come home it’s time for real food.  So far you have tried rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, sweet peas, butternut squash, carrots, avocados, pears, prunes, and apples.  So far you only really like sweet potatoes, prunes, and carrots.

Dad and you love to play in the exersaucer.  You are in for a rude awakening when you try to walk as you have no concept of gravity in that contraption.  You are completely fearless in it.

This month you seem to have grasped cause and effect.  You know that when you push this button that noise happens.  Here is a hilarious video of you demonstrating that skill.

You later learned that your hands were more effective than your head. 🙂

Dad puts you to bed around 6:30pm and you eat every 3-4 hours throughout the night. That’s a day in the life of 6 month Otis.

We just keep having more and more fun with you and we can’t believe what a pleasant temperament you have.  You got your first cold this month and it didn’t even bother you.  You were breathing heavy and blowing snot bubbles all while smiling and laughing and playing.  You are hilarious.  You burp and fart like an old man.  You giggle when we tickle you.  You make the goofiest faces.  Hanging out with you is our favorite part of every day!  We love you so much!

  1. Becky,

Great post, love all the pics. I read part of the article on sleeping you sent me. Duh, I’m a child development major and I know about object permanence. I never thought of that when it comes to sleeping. How’s it going? Mom
